Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham

Robin Hood
Robin Hood is the world’s best loved outlaw, whose popularity has endured for at least 700 years.

Many films have recreated the Robin Hood legend, centred on Nottingham castle. The story is recreated at the Tales of Robin Hood, a tourist attraction featuring tableaux and other visual effects on the appropriately named Maid Marian Way.

The Sheriff performs important ceremonial duties, that include promoting the City’s interests internationally. The title of Sheriff has existed for 950 years. In 1989, Councillor Tony Robinson became the City’s first black Sheriff.

DH Lawrence

D H Lawrence
DH Lawrence is one of the world’s major writers. The Nottinghamshire landscape, both City and county, features in much of his work. He went to Nottingham High School, and later to the City’s University college.

The son of a miner and a teacher, Lawrence’s novels often explored the deep conflicts in relationships. Lawrence’s birthplace in Eastwood is now a museum in his memory.

Lord Byron

Lord Byron
George Gordon Byron is one of the world’s finest and most famous poets. It was on St James's Street in Central Nottingham where Byron first began writing in 1798. His ancestral home was at Newstead Abbey, 10 miles north of the City.

Scandal, debt and a disastrous marriage prompted him to leave England in 1816. Newstead Abbey was handed over to the City in 1931 as a gift from Sir Julian Cahn.
