EEP Human Ecology Project
At Wilford Meadows, we look after each other. Pupils, parents and
teachers work together to achieve success. On the following pages you
will see the combination of facilities which make Wilford Meadows
special. (Our sports hall, technology equipment and farm unit, for
example.) Most of all, though, it is the skill, expertise and care of
those who teach and work here that make sure there is a bright future
for children at Wilford Meadows.
Mike Armstrong (Head Teacher)
"There's a warm welcome waiting for you at Wilford Meadows"
Wilford Meadows School is an 11-16 County Secondary Co-educational Day School.
Head Teacher:
Michael W. Armstrong M.Ed. B.Ed. Dip.Ed.Man.
Chairman of Governors:
Mrs. C. Oliver
It is situated on a superb site of over thirty acres on the south bank
of the River Trent, near the village of Wilford. Our school is in
first class condition, reflecting the responsible attitude adopted by
our pupils and a professional maintenance and caretaking team. The
excellent facilities include a main Assembly Hall, Craft Block,
Science Block, a suite of English and Mathematics rooms, an area for
the Humanities, Open Plan Areas, a Gymnasium and Sports Hall, a Dining
Hall, Library and Resource Area and a very impressive Field Studies
Centre consisting of a Horticulture section and a Farm. We have
recently established an Energy Technology Centre which provides our
pupils with unique resources for their study of energy, and the
environmental effects of energy usage.
The whole school can be seated comfortably in the main Assembly
Hall. We have a grand piano and a school organ, and the hall is
equipped with matched speakers for stereophonic sound. The area is
elaborately furnished with flowers and plants from our own Field
Studies Centre, and the adjacent open plan area is carpeted and
enhanced with exhibits and children's work. Everywhere, we show that
we care about the personal dignity of every human being.
We share our building with Rushcliffe Play Forum, Education Training,
Landscape Development, Grounds Maintenance Administration, and adult
students from South Nottinghamshire College. Working side by side with
adults in this way means that both the practical application and the
continuity of the learning process are demonstrated clearly to our
pupils every day.
School Aims
- To provide a happy and secure but challenging environment in which
each pupil is given equal opportunity to fulfil academic and personal
potential and enable all to meet the demands of our constantly
changing society.
- To provide a variety of learning experiences which reflect the
needs of the pupils and ensure the implementation of the
Nottinghamshire Entitlement Curriculum as well as fulfilling the
requirements of the National Curriculum.
- To value the contribution made by our cultural diversity and to
promote a sense of belonging and responsibility to our school, our
community and environment; to promote self respect, respect for each
other and respect for our environment.
- To adopt open participative decision-making strategies which
encourage staff, parental and student involvement in the management of
the school and the educative process.
- To ensure all staff contribute fully to the effective management
of the school community and to foster their personal and professional
development.
Visiting arrangements
Any parent wishing to visit the school may do so by telephoning for an
appointment. Parents, together with their child, can be taken on a
conducted tour of the school, either during the working day or
evening, whichever is preferred. In addition, members of the Parent
Teacher Association will act as host on an evening during the autumn
term when parents and pupils from local schools will have an
opportunity to tour the premises and to ask questions of staff,
parents and senior pupils.
General Information
The school is organised in five year groups. Children are in mixed
ability tutor groups. In years 7-9, pupils may be grouped according to
ability in Modern Languages and Mathematics. Other subjects are taught
in mixed ability groups with additional support for children with
special needs. All pupils are offered a curriculum with breadth and
depth in accordance with the curriculum statement published by the
L.E.A. and the national curriculum.
Towards the end of year 9, individual courses are planned for pupils
and there is choice within broad curriculum areas. Our learning and
teaching have benefited enormously from our involvement in the
Technical and Vocational Training Initiative.
Pupils are prepared for G.C.S.E. examinations set by the Midland
Examining Board, the Northern Examining Association, London East
Anglian Group and the Associated Examining Board.
We encourage pupils to enter Basic Tests set by the Associated
Examining Board and recognise the importance of building up basic
skills throughout their school career.
We also provide modular courses, which we assess ourselves, to enrich
our pupils' educational experience. In the upper school these courses
form part of the Wilford Meadows Challenge.
In January, 1994, the school was inspected by the Office for Standards
in Education. The subsequent report issued by OFSTED confirmed that
our school has many strengths and that the quality of teaching and
learning is satisfactory or better.
Special teaching arrangements
At some time in their school life many children experience some
learning difficulties and we have a flexible system to support
them. Pupils with long-term learning difficulties are taught in small
groups. Those with reading difficulties are assisted on an individual
basis by members of the Special Needs Department. Section XI staff are
always available to support the achievement of black and bilingual
pupils.
Some children learn quickly and need extra help to challenge
them. Others need support when they find difficulty. We have a
flexible system to meet all needs.
